Udine Audiences Favor SPLIT and CANOLA

Korea Continues Popularity Streak at 19th FEFF

The 19th edition of the Udine Far East Film Festival came to a close on April 29th after welcoming 60,000 viewers. While this year’s First Place Golden Mulberry Audience Award and Black Dragon Award went to the Japanese film Close Knit by OGIGAMI Naoko, it was once again a strong year of Korean cinema, as the Second and Third Place Audience Awards went to CHOI Kook-hee’s SPLIT and CHANG’s Canola.

CHOI’s debut film SPLIT is a bowling drama featuring YOO Ji-tae and LEE Jung-hyun, while Canola is a countryside family drama starring the legendary YOUN Yuh-jung and new star KIM Go-eun from CHANG, director of Death Bell (2008) and The Target (2014).

Other Korean films among the 19-strong delegation to the screen this year included Confidential Assignment, Fabricated City, Derailed, House of the Disappeared, Master, New Trial, RUN OFF, The Last Princess, Bluebeard, The Prison, VANISHING TIME: A BOY WHO RETURNED and the Old Boy (2003) documentary Old Days. Many of the films were supported by invited guests.

Korean films dominated last year, when they took the Golden Mulberry Audience Awards for First and Second Place with A Melody to Remember and SORI: Voice from the Heart. A year earlier, all three Audience Prizes went to Korean films: Ode to My Father, The Royal Tailor and My Brilliant Life.
