Though he got his start with the low budget indie Fish on Land in 2007, young filmmaker KIM Jin-moo didn’t break out until 2014, with the release of the controversial, North Korea-themed Apostle, a film which quickly drew the attention of international human rights workers. Following his debut, KIM also made the feature Holiday in 2010, another little seen low-budget film. With the help of crowd-funding and a high profile lead in the form of popular character actor KIM In-gwon, KIM’s third production Apostle afforded him much greater exposure. As the film deals with North Koreans and their plan to defect to the South, Apostle has drawn a lot of notice for its examination of human rights issues in North Korea. The United Nations, among other international organizations, screened the film in their headquarters. KIM quickly followed up by participating in the omnibus project The Youth, which screened in competition at the 15th Jeonju International Film Festival.
