LEE Cheol-ha, born in 1970, was working as a producer of TV commercials until 1999 when he joined Sidus FNH and served as first assistant director on <Il Mare> (2000) by LEE Hyun-seung, his first film credit. After studying at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, he was asked to co-direct a music video set in the U.S. for the then up-and-coming Korean boy band g.o.d, which led him to receive more offers from various popular bands of the time and to establish his own video production company H Films. With it also came the opportunity of making his film directing debut, and so in 2006 he released <Love Me Not>, an ambitious gothic romance that would ultimately be panned by critics. He took a more experimental approach with his second film <Story of Wine> (2008), Korea’s first interactive film which prompted viewers to pick a bottle to discover a story related to the wine they chose. He followed it up with the found footage horror <The Haunted House Project> (2010), another first in Korea. LEE continued to explore new ground with his next feature <Hello?! Orchestra> (2013), a documentary in which he challenges Korean-American violinist Richard Yongjae O’NEILL to form an orchestra made up of teenagers with no experience in music and get them to perform before an audience after three months of rehearsals. In 2015, he returned to more conventional fare with the thriller <INSANE> (2015), his most commercially successful outing to date.
