LEE Young was born in Seoul in 1976 and majored in History at University. After she studied documentary filmmaking, she started video journalism in 1999 and became a founding member of internet broadcasting system Alternative TV. In 2001, she founded documentary filmmaking group WOM and since then she has worked on documentary filmmaking, filming education, policy suggestion for media culture, distribution, and so on.
LEE Young has directed and produced diverse documentaries on social issues and minority groups. Her filmography includes Turtle Sisters(2002), Lesbian Censorship in School(2005), and OUT(2007). She produced We Are Not Defeated(2006). All of these films aroused great resonance in Korean society by discovering new agendas and stories of invisible subjects. Her latest film OUT was internationally well received and screened numerous international film festival including San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival(USA), Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival(Japan), International Women’s Film Festival of Creteil(France) and so on. Earned The Documentary Award at the International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul 2007, “This Year’s Prize’ Award at the Human Rights Film Festival in Seoul 2007. LEE next premiered her non-fiction work <Troublers> at the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival as part of its Korean Competition in 2015. The film went on to screen at the International Women’s Film Festivals of Chennai and Dortmund/Cologne.
