A filmmaking major of the Korea National University of Arts, SHIM Sung-bo came to prominence in a big way when he co-wrote the landmark Korean film <Memories of Murder> with its director BONG Joon-ho in 2003. A multiple award-winner that is widely considered to be one of the greatest Korean films of all time, <Memories of Murder> was praised for twisting genre conventions to deliver a product that became a big hit in Korea (accruing over five million admissions) as well as a successful piece of social cinema that engaged with Korea’s troubled history. SHIM also served as an assistant director on the film but it would not be until 2014 that his name was to float in the Korean film industry again, when he made the nautical thriller <Haemoo>. Once again co-writing with BONG and with the acclaimed filmmaker as his producer, SHIM wielded the megaphone for the first time on <Haemoo>, which received wide acclaim on the festival circuit and earned the distinction of being selected as Korea’s representative to the foreign-language Academy Awards category. Based on a play that was in turn inspired by real events, the film featured KIM Yun-seok alongside new star PARK Yoo-chun.Less
