Joins 7 Other Korean Films in Hong Kong Asian Film Event
Having screened across Korea and also taken a brief trip to France last month, BONG Joon-ho’s hit sci-fi Snowpiercer is preparing to dock in Hong Kong for its first non-Korean Asian appearance. The ambitious blockbuster was invited as the closing film of the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival for its 10th edition.
BONG’s film recently screened to enthusiastic responses at the 18th Busan International Film Festival, having already accrued 9.3 million admissions on the peninsula throughout its domestic release during August and September. In the film, a group of low-class citizen fight their way to the front, privileged end of a train that houses the last remnants of humanity following the start of a new ice age.
Joining Snowpiercer at HKAFF this year is a diverse selection of recent Korean cinema. Four titles, including KIM Ki-duk and HONG Sangsoo’s latest opuses Moebius and Our Sunhi and YEON Sang-ho and NOH Young-seok’s sophomore features The Fake and Intruders, were already screened in the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Also screening will be KANG Yi-kwan’s Juvenile Offender and the North-Korea/Belgium/UK co-produced comedy Comrade Kim Goes Flying, both of which bowed at last year’s Toronto. Finally, the YIM Pil-sung and KIM Jee-woon sci-fi omnibus Doomsday Book will bring the Korean lineup at HKAFF this year to eight.
