  • YEUN Sang-ho’s THE FAKE to Open Sitges Animation Program
  • by Pierce Conran / 08.13.2013
  • NOBODY’S DAUGHTER HAEWON Also Among Early Selections

The year’s Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia will feature a strong focus on animation in the form of the program ‘Anima’t’, which will screen seven eagerly awaited features in addition to staging a professional summit on animation. YEON Sang-ho’s sophomore work The Fake has been invited to open the section.

The Fake tells the story of a village which is preparing to be submerged. A swindler comes to town, posing as a representative of a fake religion and proceeds to con people out of their money. Soon, a local wastrel (Min-chul) cottons on to the scheme and tries to warn people but is quickly dismissed: Even the local reverend is oblivious to the ploy. When Min-chul’s daughter is tricked into prostitution, he can no longer sit quietly on the sidelines.

This is the second selection for the animated work following news of its world premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Vanguard section next month. YEON’s first film The King of Pigs was a big festival hit which screened at the Busan and Cannes Film Festivals among others.

The Fake joins previously announced Korean selection Nobody’s Daughter Haewon, the HONG Sangsoo film which premiered at this year’s Berlinale. The indie drama will screen as part of the festival’s ‘New Visions’ program. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) is one of the supporters of this year’s Sitges Film Festival, which will run from October 11th to 20th.
