  • OUR SUNHI and MOEBIUS Going to Toronto

The 38th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has released its final wave of selections for next month’s event and the new lineup features an additional pair of new films from two of Korea’s most renowned auteurs. HONG Sangsoo will present his film Our Sunhi, while KIM Ki-duk will be back with his latest work Moebius. Both films will be featured in TIFF’s ‘Masters’ section.

HONG’s Our Sunhi, the director’s 15th work, earned its director the Silver Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival last week. TIFF’s program notes describe the film as a coming-of-age tale, going on to say that “Hong skillfully maps out a small social network, one inevitably fraught with struggles over desire, and individuals projecting all sorts of ideas and emotions onto each other.” The film, starring JUNG Yu-mi and LEE Sun-kyun from Oki's Movie, JUNG Jae-young and KIM Sang-joong, is the seventh HONG film to feature at TIFF, following Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (2000), Turning Gate (2002), Woman on the Beach (2006), Like You Know It All (2009), Oki’s Movie (2010) and In Another Ciuntry (2012).

Menawhile, KIM Ki-duk’s Moebius, which has been billed as the director’s most controversial film, is begin described by TIFF as “a modern Greek tragedy bordering on psychological thriller, a pitchblack comedy, a crazy-weird depiction of pain-induced pleasure – in all cases, a sheer work of art, lucid and coherent in its shocking madness.” The film will premiere later this month at the Venice International Film Festival, where the director earned the Golden Lion for Pieta last year. Moebius stars CHO Jae-hyun, LEE Eun-woo and SEO Young-ju and is the ninth of the acclaimed filmmaker’s works to screen at TIFF. The Isle (2000), Address Unknown (2001), Bad Guy (2002), Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring (2003), 3-Iron (2004), Time (2006), Arirang (2011) and Pieta were all previously featured.

Our Sunhi and Moebius join previously announced Korean entries Cold Eyes, Intruders and The Fake. This year’s TIFF will take place over September 5th to 15th.
