JOO Man-ho (Kim Myeong-min) has grown up a poor but selfless man. His work ethic and skill at distance running eventually make him a national marathoner, but he never becomes a premiere athlete. Instead he is relegated to the role of ‘pacemaker’ – someone who runs alongside the star athletes for three-quarters of the marathon, making sure they stay on winning pace, but then letting them finish the race alone. Later in life, a cold-hearted marathon director (Ahn Sung-ki) scouts Joo to run again, this time pacing for Korea’s star marathoner at the 2012 London Olympics. This also creates an opportunity for Joo to complete his lifetime goal of actually running a full Olympic marathon, but it’s up to him to summon the courage and drive to fulfill his dream.
Kim Dal-joong has for a long time directed stage plays and musicals in Korea. Musical productions he has directed include <Hedwig and the Angry Inch>, <Thrill Me> and most recently, <Attack the Gas Station>. <Pacemaker> is his debut feature film.
