Ji-woong (Song) is a recent college graduate who can’t find a job. Yet despite living in a dingy apartment in a low-income area, he tries to live like a playboy, frequently phoning his mother for money. Hong-sil (Han), an extremely frugal and creative young woman, lives in the apartment opposite Ji-woong. She collects recyclables, rummages through abandoned homes, and steals sugar from coffee shops. One day she learns that her apartment complex is scheduled to be demolished, with each tenant receiving a KW7 million (US$6,000) relocation stipend. When her landlady casually mentions that Ji-woong is five months behind on his rent, Hong-sil then hatches a plan to prematurely evict Ji-woong and cheat him out of his relocation money. As the two characters are brought into each other’s worlds, they form a quirky but lasting bond.

<Penny Pinchers> was both written and directed by Kim Jeong-hwan. The two principal cast members have received many accolades for their TV work, with Han Ye-seul fresh off the TV drama <Spy Myung-Wol> and Song Joong-ki receiving solid reviews for <Sungkyunkwan Scandal> and the currently airing <Deep-rooted Tree>.
