Once a promising young writer, LEE Soo-yeon (KIM Su-hyeon) now finds herself producing formulaic scripts as an assistant to popular commercial film director MOH Jae-won (Lee). Despite a track record of predictable plots and paper-thin characters, Moh persistently packages his films as “innovative” and based strongly in reality. The demand of this work eventually exhausts Moh as well as Soo-yeon, who has dreams of writing a novel in which her characters break free from their shabby realities. However, she quickly realizes that her literary aspirations are dismissed as vanity and escapism.
Son Kwang-ju is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her numerous experimental, documentary, and fictional short films, such as 2003’s <The Third Tongue> and 2006’s <Yoyogi Park>, have screened at a variety of international film festivals and art exhibitions. <Characters>, Son’s first feature, made its world premiere at the 2011 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).
