The Witch: Part2. The Other One, released on June 15, received the box office baton of the ‘10 million viewer movie’ from The Roundup. According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on June 20 (Monday), The Witch: Part2. The Other One topped the box office during its opening week, recording 1,009,309 audiences from June 17 to 19. Its weekend sales accounted for 8.2 million USD with sales of 48.4%.
The Witch: Part 2. The Other One depicts a war of forces surrounding a girl(Cynthia) with special abilities and chasing her for their own purposes. This movie is a sequel to Director Park Hoonjung’s SF action film The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion, which was released in 2018 and attracted 3.18 million viewers. The Witch: Part 2. The Other One is also the second episode of The Witch Trilogy planned by Park Hoonjung.
The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, which attracted 1,458,121 moviegoers in total by the end of the week, ranked second at the box office among Korean films released this year in five days.
After 4 weeks at the top of the box office, The Roundup dropped to 2nd place in the box office over the weekend. However, it is still a box office hit with 550,993 viewers and 26.7% sales share over the weekend. As of June 19, the 33rd day of its release, the total number of audiences for The Roundup recorded 11,460,310, rising to 20th place in the Korean box office history.
3rd place is Pixar’s animation Lightyear, which was released on June 15, with 158,740 audiences. Lightyear is a spin-off film about the birth story of Buzz Lightyear, the main character of Pixar’s flagship box office animation ‘Toy Story’ series. 4th place is Broker, the winner of the Best Actor at Cannes, with 158,449 audiences over the weekend and 1,107,485 in toral, becoming the first Korean movie to surpass 1 million viewers among director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s films.
Thanks to the success of The Roundup, The Witch: Part2. The Other One, and Broker, the market share of Korean films soared to 84.8% from June 13 to June 19 last week. Compared to the 30% market share of Korean films in the first half of this year, the figure has risen sharply. As a result, the audience share by nationality rose to 50.2% of Korean films from January 1 to June 19.
