#ALIVE Draws a Second Breath in First Place

Zombie Film Still Top Draw as THE SINGER Struggles in 4th Place Debut

Without a compelling new release, the chart was largely dominated by holdovers this past weekend and consequently admissions took a hit, falling 55% week-on-week to 452,000 sales. Local films continued to be out in force, scoring a 76% market share, as Hollywood was unable to challenge with most major new releases still postponed.

Taking another victory lap was the zombie film #ALIVE with YOO Ah-in and PARK Shin-hye, which followed its strong debut with 256,000 viewers (USD 1.92 million) over its second weekend. This was down a hefty 64% from its opening weekend but nevertheless gives 1.55 million spectators (USD 10.89 million) to the Zip Cinema-produced surprise Covid-19 season success over its first 12 days. The film still has a week ahead of it with limited competition until Peninsula starts to take away its theaters on July 15.

Hanging on to second place during its fourth weekend in theaters was the local courtroom drama Innocence. The well-received film was down 51%, giving it 47,000 entries (USD 345,000) over the frame, with a solid 807,000 admissions (USD 5.95 million) counted to date.

Steady in third place in week three was the Pixar animation Onward, clinching another 36,000 sales (USD 256,000), down 59% week-on-week, with 343,000 tickets (USD 2.48 million) sold to date.

The highest-ranking new title on the charts was the pansori drama The Singer, from Spirits’ Homecoming (2016) director CHO Jung-rae. The film struggled during its opening with just 34,000 seats (USD 239,000) filled over the weekend and 53,000 entries (USD 366,000) recorded over its first five days.

Following last week’s rerelease of Batman Begins, which ranked fourth with just over 21,000 sales, Christopher NOLAN’s hit The Dark Knight returned to theaters, shifting 26,000 tickets (USD 168,000) over the weekend in fifth place. The film’s lifetime in total in Korea is now 4.21 million admissions.

#ALIVE will try to hang on to first place for a third weekend, with the competition this week coming from the Hollywood #MeToo drama Bombshell and a rerelease of The Dark Knight Rises, ahead of the currently scheduled Tenet launch next month. Meanwhile, the hotly anticipated TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) sequel Peninsula has been topping the reservations chart since Sunday, a full ten days ahead of its launch in cinemas.
