In a weekend that saw no new release place higher than third, holdovers kept the engine running as a solid 1.54 million tickets were sold. The local market share ticked up slightly week-on-week, as Korean films clinched a 52% majority.

Down 45% but rising one spot to claim first place was the domestic serial killer drama Dark Figure of Crime. With 553,000 admissions (USD 4.42 million) over the weekend, the Showbox title has now brought in a strong 2.83 million viewers (USD 22.05 million).

Slipping a heftier 57% as it lost its hold on the first rank was the Marvel title Venom, which added 493,000 entries (USD 3.93 million). The Sony production has taken in 3.25 million spectators (USD 25.4 million) over the course of its 12-day run.

Scoring a third place debut was the local indie drama Miss Baek. Featuring The Age of Shadows (2016) star HAN Ji-min, the low-budget title from debut director LEE Ji-won scored a very healthy 161,000 sales (USD 1.27 million) during its first weekend and has so far shifted 194,000 tickets (USD 1.51 million) in four days.

Opening in fourth place was the critically acclaimed musical drama remake A Star Is Born, following its recent premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. The film opened with 87,000 sales (USD 703,000) and has recorded 153,000 admissions (USD 1.21 million) since its Tuesday opening.

Down two spots to fifth place was the Chuseok hit The Great Battle 72,000 new viewers (USD 549,000). The siege action epic as so far brought in 5.35 million spectators (USD 40.44 million).

The top two performers of the past two weeks will be forced to take backseats this coming weekend as Damien Chazelle’s space drama First Man enters the market, where it looks set to pull in strong numbers as positive buzz rolls in from its press screening and local premiere at the Busan International Film Festival.
