Hong Kong Arts Centre to Stage Korean Women Independent Film Series

‘Women Direct. Korean Indies!’ Co-Presented by DMZ Docs and Seoul Independent Film Festival


The Hong Kong Arts Centre is set to present a series of screenings of independent films by Korean women, starting next month in Hong Kong. Co-presented by the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and the Seoul Independent Film Festival, ‘Women Direct. Korean Indies!’ will feature 13 Korean films and screenings will take place from December 12 to May 25 next year in the Louis Koo Cinema and Hong Kong Arts Centre.

The series will seek to shine a light on a growing body of Korean films made by women that highlight pressing women’s issues in a society where a rising chorus is beginning to voice their dissatisfaction with the patriarchal system.

Kicking off the series in December will be KANGYU Ga-ram’s Itaewon (2019), which won the Best Director - Documentaries Award at the Wildflower Film Awards Korea this year, and AHN Ju-young’s A Boy and Sungreen, a Korean Academy of Film Arts project which debuted at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in 2018, where it won the KTH Award.

As it continues next year, the series will also introduce several other award-winning films that debuted at BIFF, including JEON Go-woon’s Microhabitat (2018), YI Ok-seop’s Maggie (2018), KIM Cho-hee’s Lucky Chan-sil (2019), PARK Sun-joo’s Way Back Home (2019) and KIM Dong-ryung’s The Pregnant Tree and the Goblin (2019).

The event will also include documentaries such as MYOUNG So-hee’s The Strangers (2018), KIM Bo-ram’s For Vagina’s Sake (2017) – the Best Director - Documentaries Award winner at the Wildflower Film Awards Korea last year – and LEEKIL Bora’s Untold (2018). Also screening will be JEONG Da-hee’s animated short Movements, which screened in the Directors’ Fortnight section for the Cannes Film Festival last year, KIM Hyun-jung’s short Beginners’ Class – the Grand Prize winner at last year’s Seoul Independent Film Festival – and GOONG Yu-jeong’s short Unpredictable Boy (2019).
