HAIFA STREET and ROM Top BIFF New Currents Awards
MOVING ON and LUCKY CHAN-SIL Mop up Korean Film Prizes in Busan
The Vietnamese film Rom from director TRAN Thanh Huy and Mohanad HAYA’s Iraqi picture Haifa Street came away with this year’s New Currents prizes, from the signature competition at the Busan International Film Festival. A special mention was reserved for Just Like That, an Indian film from director Kislay KISLAY. The Actor & Actress of the Year awards both went to the Korean film The Education, for KIM Jun-hyung and MUN Hye-in.
Among Korean award winners, YUN Dan-bi’s Moving On and KIM Cho-hee’s Lucky Chan-sil were the big names, earning four and three prizes, respectively. Both titles earned a Directors Guild of Korea Award, while Moving On also won the NETPAC Award, a KTH Award and the Citizen Critics’ Award. Lucky Chan-sil was also presented the CGV Arthouse Award and the KBS Independent Film Award.
The Kim Ji-seok Award, which is reserved for new voices from across Asia, went to Circus of Life, from Pakistan’s Sarmad Sultan KHOOSAT and the Indian film Market from Pradip KURBAH. The BIFF Mecenat Award, which is given to new documentaries screening in Busan, went to the local film Underground by KIM Jung-geun and the Chinese work Noodle Kid from HUO Ning. The Sonje Awards for short films were handed to JIN Seong-moon’s local film Hello and Saeed KESHAVARZ’s Dragon′s Tail from Iran.
Other prizes this year include a second KTH Award for BONG Joon-young’s Lucky Monster, the CGK&SamyangXEEN Award, which went to KOO Ji-hyeon’s Kyungmi’s World, the KNN Award, picked up by LIM Sun-ae’s An Old Lady, the Busan Bank Award, handed to the Canadian film Fabulous by Mélanie CHARBONNEAU, the FIPRESCI Award for Running to the Sky, from Kyrgyzstan’s Mirlan ABDYKALYKOV, and the Busan Cinephile Award, presented to the Argentina-Uruguay co-production Que Sea Ley (Let It Be Law) by Juan SOLANAS.
