21st Edition of SIWFF Kicks off on August 28

The SEOUL International Women’s Film Festival (SIWFF) has announced the program for its upcoming 21st edition, which will kick off on August 28 and continue until September 5. This year’s festival slogan is “20+1, Faces Breaking Down the Walls,” while the program will feature 119 films from 31 countries.

SIWFF will open its doors with the film God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya, from Macedonian director Teona STRUGAR MITEVSKA, which screened in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.

The film will feature both an international and Korean competitive sections, with eight and seven films, respectively, as well as the 'Asian Shorts Competition’, the ‘I-Teens Competition’ and the ‘New Currents’ section.

Among the special programs on offer this year, SIWFF will hold memorial screenings for the renowned filmmakers Agnès VARDA and Barbara HAMMER, both of whom passed away earlier this year. The festival is also staging a section on Polish Women's Cinema, a ‘Polemics’ stand entitled ‘Sexual Politics of ‘Room’’, a ‘Women’s Faces in Korean Cinema’ sidebar for the 100 year anniversary of Korean films, a program to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Parituh, the first Korean women filmmakers’ collective, and a section for the 10th anniversary of the project market Pitch&Catch, which will include various completed works that have gone through the market.

This year’s honorary ambassador will be Queen of the Night (2013) actress KIM Min-jung.
