Hong Sangsoo Returns to Berlinale

ON THE BEACH ALONE AT NIGHT Invited to Competition

Renowned Korean auteur HONG Sang-soo is set to return to the Berlin International Film Festival next month after his latest film On the Beach Alone at Night, which will have its world premiere in Berlinale’s international competition.

While nothing is yet known about the film’s plot, save that it takes place in the seaside town of Gangneung on the Eastern coast of Korea, we do know that the film stars KIM Min-hee and JUNG Jae-young, both of whom featured in HONG’s Locarno Golden Leopard-winning effort Right Now, Wrong Then (2015), for which they both earned acting accolades around the world. The film also stars SEO Young-hwa, MOON Sung-keun, KWON Hae-hyo, SONG Sun-mi, AHN Jae-hong.

The film is HONG’s 19th, following last year’s Yourself and Yours, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The filmmaker also filmed his 20th work Claire’s Camera during the Cannes Film Festival last year, which stars his In Another Country (2012) collaborator Isabelle Huppert as well as KIM Min-hee once again. HONG and KIM are also filming his 21st work in Central Seoul.

On the Beach Alone at Night is the first Korean film to appear in the Berlinale competition since HONG’s film Nobody’s Daughter Haewon in 2013. The festival this year will hold its 67th edition from February 9th to 19th.
