Filming for SPECIAL CITIZEN with CHOI Min-shik Gets Underway

Mayoral Drama Co-Stars KWAK Do-won

CHOI Min-shik’s new film, the mayoral drama Special Citizen, kicked off filming on April 28th. The veteran star plays a two-term Seoul mayor facing a tough reelection campaign. Wielding the megaphone is Moby Dick (2011) director PARK In-jae.

Co-starring in the project are THE WAILING star KWAK Do-won as CHOI’s aide, while LA Mi-ran (Ode to My Father, 2014) plays his election opponent and SHIM Eun-kyoung (Miss Granny, 2014) will appear as the chief of a youth innovation committee. Also on board are Oasis (2002) star MOON So-ri, Korean-American actor LEE Ki-hong, star of The Maze Runner franchise and Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, who will play RA’s son, a study abroad student who returns to help her with her campaign, and RYU Hye-young of My Dictator (2014).

Star of PARK Chan-wook’s Old Boy (2003) and the period naval epic Roaring Currents (2014), the most successful Korean film of all time, CHOI most recently headlined the period hunting drama The Tiger.

Since he was cast in Special Citizen last year, co-star KWAK’s profile has risen tremendously following the enormous success of NA Hong-jin’s THE WAILING, which received rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival and became a hit both in Korea and on limited release in North America.

Palette Pictures is handling production while Showbox will be in charge of domestic distribution.
