VR Short Film to Screen in Festival’s New Frontier Section
The PyeongChang Olympic 2018 Winter Games aren’t set to start until February, but a trio of Korean filmmakers will get to hit the ski slopes a little earlier. The Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) announced that director LEE Seung-moo’s 11-minute VR short film Eyes in the Red Wind, which was made through KAFA+ VR production program, has been selected to screen in the ‘New Frontier’ category at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The Sundance Film Festival’s ‘New Frontier’ section selects independent and experimental media projects that promote artistic development using new media such as VR, AR, MR (Mixed Reality) and AI.
Eyes of the Red Wind tells the story of a family that holds a ritual with a shaman to help the soul of a deceased man who was drowned. The film was previously invited to the 50th Sitges Film Festival this past October as part of the ‘Samsung Cocoon’ competition section. Eyes of the Red Wind was created through KAFA’s ‘Advanced Film Production’ curriculum which gives filmmakers experience in producing projects in 3D, 60HFR, ScreenX and VR formats.
Since its introduction in the second half of 2016, KAFA’s VR filmmaking program has produced a total of 65 VR short films and seen immediate success with Eyes of the Red Wind going to Sundance Film Festival and KIM Young-kap’s Reawakening of Memories also being invited to the Samsung Cocoon Competition section of this year’s Sitges International Film Festival as well as the ‘VR Cinema in BIFF’ section of the 22nd Busan International Film Festival.
The 2018 Sundance Film Festival will be held from January 18 to 28 at the Sundance Mountain Resort in Park City, Utah.
