Seoul International Youth Film Festival announces 2012 competitors

The 14th Seoul International Youth Film Festival (SIYFF), which will take place August 23-29, 2012, has announced the 39 short films that will make up its two competitive sections, Stimulating View 1 (films made by youths aged 13-18) and Stimulating View 2 (ages 18 and over). Of the 39 films competing, 21 are Korean productions.

Under the slogan of “Jump Up!,” SIYFF accepted a record 1,110 submissions from 65 different countries during its three-month acceptance period this spring. With over 250 more submissions than its 2011 edition, worldwide interest in SIYFF appears to be growing. A record 170 of the submissions were also from Korean filmmakers. From this pool, 21 films will appear in Stimulating View 1, while 18 were selected for Stimulating View 2.

Within Stimulating View 1, many of the shorts focus on the challenges and dramas that paint the lives of many youth worldwide – high school graduation, stress about college entrance exams, relationships, friendship and the generation gap. However, the selection committee noted that many of these themes are repeated across the section, the tone and style in which they are delivered varies greatly. The committee was overall impressed with what they saw as independent, thoughtful and creative filmmaking on par with many experienced directors.

New to SIYFF 2012 is the removal of an upper age-limit for the Stimulating View 2 section. With this, the focus of the section has shifted away from youth filmmakers and towards general themes of youth, childhood, family and coming-of-age regardless of a director’s age. By including more experienced directors, the section will provide models of professional execution, distinctive style and masterful storytelling for the fest’s youth participant.

Within Stimulating View 1, a Grand Prize, Artistic Experiment Award and Challenging Reality Award will be handed out. Within Stimulating View 2, a Vision Award and Jury Special Award will be offered. Additionally, an Audience Award will be given in each of the festival’s sections, competitive or not.

SIYFF began in 1999 with the platform of increasing youth participation in media culture and fostering intercultural communication through film. A complete list of 2012’s competing films follows.
