Yeon Sangho to Helm Sci-Fi Jung-E for Netflix
Brain Cloning Action film to Star Kang Sooyoun, Kim Hyunjoo and Ryu Gyeongsu
Director Yeon Sangho, who is directing at the set of Peninsula
Yeon Sangho is partnering with Netflix for the second time on his upcoming feature film Jung-E (working title), a sci-fi film that will star Kang Sooyoun, Kim Hyunjoo and Ryu Gyeongsu.
Set in the 22nd century, when climate change has made the earth uninhabitable and humanity exists in a man-made shelter, Jung-E focuses on a civil war that breaks out and whose success hinges on brain cloning technology that is being performed on the legendary robot mercenary Jung-E.
Director Yeon, known the world over for his zombie hits Train to Busan (2016) and Peninsula (2020), recently completed his first series Hellbound, featuring Yoo Ahin, which will bow on Netflix at some point this year.
Kang Sooyoun, who plays the team leader of a brain cloning lab, is known for her roles in classic films such as Im Kwontaek’s The Surrogate Woman (1987), for which she earned the Best Actress Award at the Venice International Film Festival. She recently served as the chairwoman of the Busan International Film Festival and hasn’t appeared on screen for eight years.
Kim Hyunjoo, known for her work in drama series such as the recent Undercover and who also appears in Hellbound, will play Jung-E, the titular legendary mercenary. Last seen in the Netflix film The Call and also a member of the Hellbound cast, Ryu Gyeongsu will play the research center director determined for the cloning of Jung-E’s brain to succeed.
