BURNING Takes Home Top Grand Bell Award

JANG Joon-hwan Picks Up Best Director Prize

The 55th Grand Bell (Daejong) Film Awards took place in Seoul on the evening of October 22, where LEE Chang-dong’s latest critically acclaimed work BURNING, which premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, was handed the Best Film Prize. This year’s awards were very evenly spread out with HWANG Dong-hyuk’s The Fortress earning the most with three technical prizes. Among the double prize winners were 1987: When the Day Comes (2017), Believer, The Fortress (2017), Microhabitat and The Spy Gone North.

This year’s Best Director Prize went to JANG Joon-hwan’s political drama 1987: When the Day Comes. NA Moon-hee earned another Best Actress Prize for her role in the comfort woman drama I Can Speak (2017), while HWANG Jung-min and LEE Sung-min shared the Best Actor Prize for the espionage drama The Spy Gone North. The Best Supporting Actor and Actress Awards both went to performances in the crime drama Believer, to the late KIM Joo-hyuk and JIN Seo-yeon.

JEON Go-woon earned both the Best New Director and Best Screenplay Awards for her indie debut Microhabitat. KIM Da-mi was awarded the Best New Actress Award for The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion while LEE Ga-sub took home the Best New Actor Prize for The Seeds of Violence (2017).

Among technical prizes, The Fortress took home Best Cinematography, Best Lighting and Best Music, ILLANG : THE WOLF BRIGADE won Best Costume Design, GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum earned Best Editing, The Spy Gone North was handed Best Art Design and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days came away with the Best Technical Award.

1987: When the Day Comes also won the Best Planning Prize and the late KIM Joo-hyuk and Seol-hyun were awarded this year’s Star Prizes.
