Fantasia Completes Program with 24 from Korea

THE WITCH Competes in Montreal Genre Fest

The Fantasia International Film Festival has revealed its third wave of programming to complete its program announcements for this year’s 22nd edition. The Montreal-based genre film festival has invited 24 films from Korea, including 15 feature films and 9 shorts.

Featuring in this years’ ‘Cheval Noir’ competition will be PARK Hoon-jung’s latest film The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion. Having its international premiere in Montreal, the action-mystery features new face KIM Da-mi as a young girl in the countryside with a secret past that comes back to haunt her. Currently, on release in Korea, the film has already drawn over two million viewers. The busy director PARK will, in fact, have two films at the festival, as his North Korea serial killer thriller V.I.P.(2017) is also invited.

Also in the ‘Cheval Noir’ competition lineup will be the Indonesia-Korea co-production Satan’s Slaves, a horror film from Indonesian filmmaker Joko ANWAR. Meanwhile, the ‘Action!’ competition will include the festival premiere of LEE Hae-young’s hit Drug War remake Believer, which recently attracted over five million viewers in Korea.

Other features screening at the festival this year include HWANG Dong-hyuk’s period siege drama The Fortress (2017), LEE Chang-hee’s mystery-thriller The Vanished, LEE Byoung-heon’s affair comedy What a Man Wants, KIM Jin-muk’s countryside thriller TRUE FICTION, JEON Go-woon’s quirky drama Microhabitat, KANG Yun-sung’s cops and gangsters film THE OUTLAWS (2017), JANG Joon-hwan’s hit political drama 1987: When the Day Comes (2017), SHIN Dong-seok’s indie drama Last Child (2017), BAEK Seung-bin’s sci-fi omnibus I Have a Date with Spring, JUNG Bum-shik’s found footage horror GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum, and KIM Yong-wan’s sports drama Champion.

Among the Korean shorts on display at Fantasia this year will be Jean Yoon’s AN OBITUARY (2016), SEO Hee’s Best Partner Ever (2017), LEE Seung-moo’s Eyes in the Red Wind (2017), KIM Min-hye’s The Great Hand and the Bulgasari (2017), MOON Ji-won’s Nose Nose Nose EYES! (2017), KIM Ji-hyeon’s Island of the Deceased, PARK Ye-na’s Lovely Girl, SEO Ji-hyeong’s Crazy Cat and JEON Seung-bae’s Saturday’s Apartment.

This year’s Fantasia kicked off on July 12 and will run until August 2.
