Comedy Troupe Documentary Shooting in LA and Korea
Veteran actor
CHA In-pyo is stepping behind the camera to direct his first feature-length film
Good Fellas: Ongals and the Stranger (working title). The documentary project began production in Los Angeles in January and is currently filming in Korea, where it is expected to wrap in May.
The film follows the exploits of The Ongals, a Korean slapstick comedy troupe that has been spreading Korean comedy around the globe since it was established in 2007. Despite having played on some of the biggest stages in the world, including the Soho Theatre in London’s West End, the troupe is still eyeing the ultimate prize, a place on a stage in Las Vegas. Good Fellas documents their attempts to achieve that dream.
CHA, who is co-directing with
JEON Haelim, is known for roles in Korean releases such as
Hanbando (2006) and
Crossing (2008), as well as English-language projects, such as the Benson LEE directed
Seoul Searching (2015), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015.
Prior to
Good Fellas, CHA directed the short film
50 (2017), which was screened at the
Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and the London East Asian Film Festival last year. CHA has also been active in other ways behind the camera of late, as he signed on to produce the American faith-based picture
Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Progress, in which he also stars, through his production and management company TKC Pictures last year.
Good Fellas is the second feature-length project from TKC Pictures.
