Ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 21st, Korean thriller The Villainess has been sold by sales group Contents Panda to North American distributor Well Go USA.
Directed by JUNG Byung-gil, who previously made the stuntmen documentary Action Boys (2008) and the thriller Confession of Murder (2012), The Villainess features KIM Ok-vin of PARK Chan-wook’s Thirst (2009) as a trained assassin who becomes a sleeper agent for government. Living as a theater actress, she will be granted her freedom in ten years, but then two men show up and secrets from her past begin to emerge. The film also stars SHIN Ha-kyun, known for roles in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Save the Green Planet (2003).
Well Go USA has distributed several major Korean titles over the years, including a number straight out of Cannes, such as NA Hong-jin’s THE WAILING and YEON Sang-ho’s TRAIN TO BUSAN last year.
In a statement, Well Go USA president Doris Pfardrescher said: “The Villainess features peerless action sequences, created by JUNG Byung-gil and his stunt director KWON Kwi-deok, that will leave audiences breathless.”
