On the heels of its recent box office run in Korea, high concept melodrama The Beauty Inside is gearing up for a Chinese-language remake. The film, which will see BAIK once again take on directing duties, will be one of the first projects from the new outfit HUACE & N.E.W., a joint venture between Korean film studio Next Entertainment World (which made the original) and Chinese production house Huace Media.
Starring HAN Hyo-joo (who will take on a small role in the remake), The Beauty Inside is based on web film made by Intel and Toshiba in 2012 about a man who wakes up as a different person every day and must deal with his condition when he falls in love. The film was a moderate hit in August, attracting 2.05 million viewers (USD 13.86 million) to theaters.
Last October, Huace invested USD 52 million to acquire a 15% stake in N.E.W. ahead of the company’s IPO. During an event held at the Busan International Film Festival, HUACE & N.E.W. also announced two other projects, including a remake of the soon-to-be-released N.E.W. thriller The Phone and TheWitch, a live-action adaptation of Korean webtoon being prepped as two projects for both China and Korea. Taiwanese filmmaker Leste CHEN, behind the Chinese Miss Granny remake 20! Once again, and Obsessed director KIM Dae-woo will serve as executive artistic co-directors on each version.
