Special Jury Prize for Korean Short in Clermont-Ferrand

MINSU KIM IN WONDERLAND Triumphs in France

Last week, the Korean short Minsu Kim in Wonderland by SHIM Chan-yang took home the Special Jury Prize from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, one of the most prestigious short film events in the world. Meanwhile the Grand Prix of Clermont-Ferrand’s 37th edition, which took place from January 30th to February 7th, went to the Canadian short Hole.

SHIM’s film tells the story of Minsu Kim, who returns to Korea following an absence of 13 years, only to find it to have become more frightening and strange than when he had left it. The director’s previous film An Unexpected Vacation (2012) won the Apple Cinema Award at the 14th Daegu Independent Short Film Festival and a Jury Special Mention at the 7th Daejeon Independent Film & Video Festival.

Alongside Minsu Kim in Wonderland, NA Young-kil’s Hosanna was also in International Competition, while CHOI Bong-su’s The Hole was in the Lab Competition. Korean shorts often appear in Clermont-Ferrand lineups, while the last one to take a prize at the event was YOON Ga-eun’s Guest, which picked up the Grand Prix in the International Competition back in 2012.
