Attendance Drop for December Releases

As the holiday crowds have had their share of theatre offerings, most films are experiencing a steady decline in numbers. In the midst of the slow down, My Love, Don’t Cross that River continues to hold the top spot at the diversity box office. According to the Korean Film Council’s Integrated Ticket Sales Network, My Love, Don’t Cross that River has been number one at the box office for seven consecutive weeks and has collected a total of 4.64 million admissions. It is raising attention as it has the potential to become the first documentary film to sell over five million tickets. However, after the first week in the New Year, the film has also been seeing a large decline in numbers. Ten day after its release, the Dardenne Brothers’ Two Days, One Night recorded 20,000 admissions. By its 11th day, the total number of tickets reached 23,613, which shows signs of a decline just like all other diversity films, but at a much slower rate of 5%, so we can anticipate a longer run.

Mommy, which is in 3rd place at the diversity box office, and December releases Mood Indigo and Clouds of Sils Maria are also seeing declines in attendance. Mira Story is scheduled to open on the 15th and the question is if it can carry on the legacy of My Love, Don’t Cross that River as a Korean documentary. Many are also awaiting Xavier Dolan’s debut film I Killed My Mother (2009) which is opening on the same day.
