This film reveals how a local community has been destroyed by a humungous power of the state policy in Korea. It is not just the breakdown of a village, Gangjeong, but also the failure of democracy in Korea. With the lack of communication, this documentary asks if we have any hope in the future. The story is told by a traveler, Mira, who has been unemployed. The camera follows her journey and discovers an unofficial secret of Gangjeong village in Jeju island -- despair and hope!
It’s already 4 years since Mira graduated. But Mira has no job. She’s been depressed and needed a trip to recoup energy and confidence. Then there is a chance to leave for Jeju Island. She decides to participate in helping bring tens of thousands of books by ship to a village in Jeju. Honestly, she didn’t care where it was, she just needed some healing. She meets various people on the boat. Frustrated people like her, people with a clear understanding, and people who actively promote book culture all took the same boat. Meeting and talking to all these people, she tries to forget her worries that have pressed her down - the standard yardstick of success. The 13-hour journey nears its end. Mira’s expectation of the island is growing because she has never set foot on the land. She believes that people’s good intentions on the boat could reach the hearts of the villagers. Finally, they arrive in Jeju. 5,000 people wishing for peace on Gangjeong have arrived with 35,000 books. On her first ever trip to Jeju, she’s so thrilled to see villagers and of course hoping to eat good food, sightsee, and donate books. Despite her high expectations, as soon as she arrives, the entrance is jammed with riot police.
