Indie pregnancy drama Ten Months, a feature project from the Korea National University of Arts (K’Arts) debuted this year in the Korean Competition of the Jeonju International Film Festival, where its pressing themes about an unplanned pregnancy, single motherhood, and all the taboos that surround these issues quickly turned it into one of the most talked-about films of the festival. The title refers to how pregnancy terms are calculated in Korea. Since the Lunar calendar is used, ten 28-day periods are counted, as opposed to the nine calendar months often used elsewhere. After Jeonju, this debut film from director Namkoong Sun went on to receive a special mention in the Uncaged section at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) this summer.
The film stars Choi Sungeun, recently seen in the hit JTBC drama Beyond Evil, as 28-year-old game developer Mirae who one day suddenly realizes that she is 11 weeks pregnant. She tells her boyfriend, and his immediate response is to say that they should get married. A vegetarian, the boyfriend is forced to work on his parent’s pig farm to ensure that they get the support they need. Meanwhile, when Mirae’s boss finds out about the pregnancy, all the hard work she’s put into her career comes tumbling down. The film co-stars Bek Hyunjin of SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS (2020) and Juvenile Offender (2011) actor Seo Youngjoo.
