The Number of Viewers Increased 12.2% from the Same Time Last Year
The number of audiences and the total sales in April were 11.21 million and USD 80.4 million, respectively. According to the report on April 2017 Korean film industry by
Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the total number of viewers increased 1.22 million and 12.2% while the total sales grew more than USD 8.5 million and 11.9% from the same period of last year.
Market share of Korean films was 38.2% while that of foreign films was 61.8%. The number of local film viewers was 4.28 million, with 1.03 million and 31.7% increase, while the ticket sales of them was USD 30.2 million, up 29.8% and USD 6.95 million over a year ago. Meanwhile, the number of foreign film viewers was 6.93 million with 2.8% and 190,000 viewers increase, and the ticket sales of them was USD 50.2 million, which is 3.4% and USD 1.7 million more than those of the previous year.
Number one at the Korean box office in April was Hollywood blockbuster
The Fate of the Furious attracting 3.2 million moviegoers. Disney’s
Beauty and the Beast with 1.54 million viewers and action thriller
The Prison with 1.12 million spectators came in second and third respectively followed by political drama
The Mayor bringing 900,000 audiences and periodic comedy
The King’s Case Note drawing 720,000 filmgoers.
The best performing distributor was
UIP Korea which released two films including
The Fate of the Furious, recording 28.5% market share.
Showbox came in second with 18.0% market share distributing
The Prison and
The Mayor, while The
Walt Disney Company Korea, which distributed
Beauty and the Beast and two more, reached the third place with 14.1% market share.
