Born in 1986, KANG Gil-woo had a passion for drawing ever since he was in kindergarten, and so, having decided he would pursue an artistic career, entered a College of Fine Arts. However, as is often the case in Korea, he had to put his studies on hold for a while as he was conscripted for compulsory military service, and by the time he was discharged two years later, he found himself not so eager to draw as before and felt the need to explore a new vocation. While he was preparing to take again the standardized college entrance examen, he discovered the various applications of art and design in films, and so he decided to enroll himself in the theater and film department of Chung-Ang University. In his freshman year, as he was observing actors performing on the set he had designed, he felt it was kind of unfair that they are the ones who can really enjoy moving about in his creation, and so he thought he might as well give it a try. After graduation, he made his debut on the stage and notably performed the play <Memento Mori> for close to three years, while taking roles in several short movies such as <Pollock> (2017) and <Morning of the Dead> (2018). Apart from short appearance in <Along with the Gods: The Two Gods> (2017) and <Swing Kids> (2018), his first major role came when he was cast in the indie drama <To My River> (2018), an offer he received when the lead actress KANG Jin-a called him one day out of the blue to ask if she could recommend him for the role. Even though they had never met before, KANG had actually seen him three years earlier in a school musical and had been so impressed by his performance it naturally came to her mind when director PARK Kun-young was looking for a male lead. After that work, KANG was cast as one of the four leads in the sports drama <The Boy From Nowhere> (2019).
