Born in 1981, Lee Sangmoon became a movie buff when he was in high school. It didn’t take long for him to start considering filmmaking as a career, but it was eventually his best friend who gave him the last push he needed, as they promised each other to do a program in theater and film at Seogang University. As part of the first promotion of film graduates of that school, he initially felt like he was lacking contacts with senior students who could have helped him get started in the industry. He first worked as first assistant director on the drama series <Athena: Goddess of War> (2010), before serving as an assistant director on <Horny Family> (2012). He was first assistant director on <The Stone> (2012), <No Breathing> (2013) and <The Bacchus Lady> (2016), until he made his directing debut with <Young Adult Matters> (2020). His sophomore effort, <Highway Family> (2022), about a family living in a tent at a rest area, premiered at the Busan International Film Festival.
