Born in 1985, Hong Junpyo has always carried around a sketchbook ever since kindergarten. After attending a high school specialized in humanities, he was admitted into the Korea National University of Arts in 2004, where he learned animation techniques. His graduation project, the short <Across the Wind> (2012) was first presented at the Indie-AniFest where it won the First Flight Award (for Best Student Film). In 2013, he founded Studio Roomer along with two former classmates, but as they quit to pursue their own creative ways Hong continued to run the studio alone, which now boasts 10 employees. After working on commissioned works for a while, he started to feel the need to create his own projects, and so in 2017 he released the 2-part web animation <Everyday a Different Menu>, in which a food cart owner prepares a different dish for every day of the week. The quality of the animation was noticed by Myung Films, which contacted him in 2017 with an offer to serve as director on their project of an animation feature based on the life of 1970s social unrest martyr Chun Taeil. The resulting title, <Chun Tae-il> (2021) received the Contrechamps Jury Distinction from the Annecy International Animation Festival.
