Not to be confused with his namesake Im Sangsoo (only the Romanized forms of their names are spelled differently), Lim Sangsu, born in 1981, was majoring in advertising and PR when he found himself more interested in the filmmaking club of the school than in his studies proper. Soon after, he managed to work as an assistant director to Yim Soonrye on the indie feature films <Fly, Penguin> (2009) and <Rolling Home with a Bull> (2010), and he later served as assistant director on the romcom <Spellbound> (2011) and production assistant on <The Spy: Undercover Operation> (2012). After making his directing debut with the short <Rain Shower> (2017), which was selected for the Korean short competition section of the Jeonju International Film Festival, he entered the Korea Academy of Film Art to take the Feature Film Program which accompanies debuting filmmakers throughout the whole process of producing their first feature film from the first draft to its theatrical release. In 2022, he presented the resulting title, the thriller <Drown> (2022), based on a short film script he had written a decade before and expanded upon. The film premiered as part of the Harbour section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
