JANG Chang-won is a film director who has been part of the film crew of many of LEE Joon-ik’s works. Having broken into the film industry in 2005 when he was hired to assist LEE on the hit period drama <King And The Clown> (2005), he became first assistant director for LEE’s musical mid-life crisis drama <The Happy Life> (2007), a position he would assume again for KIM Dong-uk’s comedy thriller <Hello Murderer> (2010) and LEE’s war comedy <Battlefield Heroes> (2010). Soon after, he thought it was time for him to step into the director’s chair and started to write screenplays. After several setbacks, such as the release of some movie that suddenly made one of his scripts feel redundant, he set his mind on the story of a swindler fighting against injustice and took inspiration from the case of the largest pyramid scheme in Korean history that was operated by JO Hui-pal in the 2000s. <The Swindlers> eventually released in 2017, attracting 4 million viewers and topping the box office for three weeks.
