Byun Yohan was born in 1986 and pursued his studies at the Korean National University of Arts as a theater major. He appeared in a number of short films starting 2011, before his feature film debut, in a leading role no less, came about in 2013. He starred in the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) drama-thriller <Tinker Ticker>, as a professor’s assistant who makes bombs in his spare time and falls in with the wrong person. That same year he also appeared in a supporting part in the hit thriller <Cold Eyes>, which was followed up by another small part in the hitman action-thriller <No Tears for the Dead>. In 2014, he headlined his second KAFA feature, the cyberbullying mystery <Socialphobia>. The film debuted to acclaim at the Busan International Film Festival and became an enormous success when it opened in 2015 in local theaters, attracting around a quarter of a million spectators, a significant amount for an independent film. Byun has also been active on TV, appearing in the smash hit workplace drama series <Misaeng> (2014) and the romcom series <Ex-Girlfriends’ Club> (2015). After that, he ventured into the period drama genre with the series <Six Flying Dragons> (2015-2016), before returning to thriller fare with the film <A Day> (2017). He then started to gain international recognition when he was cast as Kim Taeri’s noble betrothed in the hit historical drama series <Mister Sunshine> (2018). His collaboration with Director Lee Joonik on the historical drama <The Book of Fish> (2019), in which he played a humble fisherman who becomes friend with Sul Kyunggu’s scholar, led to more critical acclaim.
