AN Bo-young has studied film direction at the Korea National University of Arts. When some of her fellow students, who were in a rush to make the militant omnibus documentary film <Jam Docu GANGJEONG> (2011) that opposed the construction of a naval base on Jeju Island, needed someone to manage the project and coordinate the shootings, she stepped in to take the role of producer. She enjoyed so much being involved in the whole process of filmmaking that she eventually decided to keep working as a producer. She joined soon after the independent film production and distribution company Cinema DAL. In 2015, she was named Best Independent Filmmaker by the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video and won the Best Documentary Award at the 16th Women in Film Korea Festival. When director PARK Suk-young asked her later that year to produce and distribute his project <Steel Flower> (2016), she took the occasion to leave her company and found her own production company Deep Focus.
