Born in 1979 as KIM Min-sun, KIM Gyu-ri was involved in television work as early as the mid-1990s before edging into the acting world full-time starting in 1999 as a high school girl in the classic K-horror <Memento Mori>. From then on she built a career for herself through supporting roles in TV and also film, both in the mainstream and indie realms. Some of her notable early roles included an alluring college student in the indie <My Beautiful Days> (2002) and a co-starring role in IM Kwon-taek’s period gangster film <Low Life> (2004). Following that she was able to secure some lead roles, including a talented painter posing as a man in the period drama <Portrait of a Beauty> (2008). It was around this time that KIM became involved in a controversy when she made a statement speaking out against eating beef imported from the United States. Following the media attention she re-emerged under her new name KIM Gyu-ri. She appeared in HONG Sangsoo’s <HaHaHa> (2010) and the KIM Ki-duk produced <Poongsan> (2011). More indies followed, such as the low-budget romcom <My Dear Girl, Jin-young> (2013) and <Another Family> (2013), which took aim at the working conditions in Samsung’s semi-conductor plants. The next year she appeared once again in an IM Kwon-taek film, alongside AHN Sung-ki in <Revivre>.
