Following the short <The End of an Alley> in 2004, HONG Won-chan entered the mainstream film industry as a scriptwriter, specializing in high-end thrillers. He first worked with NA Hong-jin to write his iconic debut, the genre-bending thriller <The Chaser> (2008), which catapulted both KIM Yun-seok and HA Jung-woo to stardom after attracting over five million viewers to theaters and earning critical acclaim at home and abroad, including a selection at the Cannes Film Festival. HONG next worked with LEE Ho-jae to pen the stock market heist film <The Scam> in 2009, starring PARK Hee-soon and PARK Yong-ha. HONG teamed up with NA, as well as actors KIM and HA, once more for the gritty revenge thriller <The Yellow Sea> (2010). Another critical hit, the film was also invited to Cannes and screened widely around the world. One more revenge thriller followed for HONG in 2012, when he co-wrote JUNG Byung-gil’s <Confession of Murder>. HONG next went to work on his directorial debut, the workplace murder mystery <Office>, starring KO Asung, PARK Sung-woong, and BAE Sung-woo. HONG’s debut, which followed a detective who investigates the murder of an entire family at a company, proved he could stand on his own two feet, earning itself an invitation to the Midnight Screenings at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
