Born in 1950, JOO Ho-sung has had a passion for acting since he took part in plays performed in his church when he was in elementary school. His parents being strongly opposed to him pursuing a career on stage, he decided to study theatre and film at Chung-Ang University to become a playwright. However, as he kept playing on the side, he eventually made up his mind to be a professional actor. After graduation, he made his official debut in 1969 with the play “Self-Immolation”, and passed the same year an audition for a voice actor position at public TV network KBS. As he started dubbing all kind of works such as cartoons and foreign movies, his voice became familiar to millions of viewers. Thanks to the contacts made while working there, he received his first opportunities to play on the silver screen, starting with <Vagabond Singer'S Begging Song> in 1984. In 1988, he won Best Actor in Theater at the Baeksang Arts Awards for his one-man show “Alcohol”. After having appeared in many plays, notably performances from Sanullim Theater, he moved into the director’s chair in 1990 with “Broadway Mama” and went on the next year with “Les Misérables”. In 2013, at the age of 62, he made his first film as a director, <Polaroid>. He is also the father of actors JANG Na-ra and JANG Sung-won.
