JUHN Jai-hong honed his directorial skills as an assistant director to [KIM Ki-duk] along with [JANG Cheol-soo] and [CHANG Hun]. His feature debut was with <Beautiful>(2008), a story of a beautiful young woman who constantly gets love calls from men around her but starts to curse her body and harm herself after being raped by one of her admirers. Given its explicit expressions of fascinations and loathing on human body, the movie seems to be rooted firmly in the sensibility of [KIM Ki-duk] movies. In fact, <Beautiful> is based on [KIM Ki-duk]’s original ideas. JUHN Jai-hong is also known to be speedy and economical in his shooting, and this is a trait resembling KIM’s directing methods. <Beautiful> has been screened at the Berlin International Film Festival and Chicago Film Festival among many. His 2011film is <Poongsan> starring [YOON Kye-sang] and [KIM Gyu-ri]. Produced by [KIM Ki-duk], too, the film centers on a mysterious man who travels back and forth between South and North Korea and delivers everything possible. Even though this was a low-budget production, thanks to its audacious original concept dealing with North-South relation, the film was successful at the box office. The film also went to the competition section of 2011 Rome International Film Festival. For his next work, JUHN separated from his mentor to make <Gifted>, an exploration of desperation that reveals a hitherto unknown darkness within its lead character, played by KIM Beom-joon. The film was first screened at the Busan International Film Festival in 2014.
