At the age of 30, JANG Moon-il debuted as an assistant director on PARK Kwang-soo’s 1993 film <To the Starry Island>, which he followed up with JANG Sun-woo’s <To You, From Me> (1994). Two years later he debuted as a screenwriter on JANG Sun-woo’s seminal Gwangju massacre drama <A Petal>.
In 2000, he made his directing debut from his own script with the comedy <The Happy Funeral Director>, starring IM Chang-jung. Though not a hit in Korea, the film received numerous festival invitations, from the Cairo and Quebec International Film Festivals, among others. Five years later, JANG wrote the romantic comedy <My Girl and I>, featuring CHA Tae-hyun and SONG Hye-kyo. In 2007, he returned to directing with the <A Good Day to Have an Affair>, another romantic drama, this time exploring the taboo subject of extra marital affairs of two couples featuring older woman and younger men. The film starred KIM Hye-soo and YOON Jin-seo, as well as new faces LEE Min-ki and LEE Jong-hyuk. It was another long gap for JANG, but he returned in 2015 with the rural dramedy <My Sister, the Pig Lady>. The film debuted at the Montreal World Film Festival and went on to win the Grand Prix from the Osaka Asian Film Festival the following year.
