LEE An-kyu, born in 1977, is a film director who has been KIM Jee-woon’s longtime assistant director for more than a decade. He honed his skills while working on KIM’s debut feature, the black comedy <The Quiet Family> (1998), and continued his collaboration with the internationally celebrated director with psychological horror <A Tale Of Two Sisters> (2003), cult thriller <A Bittersweet Life> (2004) and Manchuria-set western <The Good, The Bad, And The Weid> (2008), the latter of which marking his first credit as a first assistant director. After serving in the same position on LEE Joon-ik’s <Blades of Blood> (2009), LEE was determined to jump into the director’s chair and started to work on the script of his directorial debut. In order to dispel the preconceived idea that the noir genre can only be centered on male characters, he had the idea of creating a female protagonist. After many years of hard work, he eventually released in 2017 his directorial debut <A Special Lady> (2017). At the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival where the film had its world premiere, it won the Focus Asia Award (for Best Asian Film), which was later completed with a Special Mention in Thriller Competition at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
