Born in 1971, LEE Gae-byok graduated in 1998 from Cheongju University in film and theatre. He was first noticed in 1996 when his short film <I am the Movie> (1995) won the Silver Prize at the Golden Crown Film Festival (now Seoul Independent Film Festival). Having started his career as an assistant on PARK Chan-wook’s <Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance> (2002), he later had the privilege of working as first assistant director on PARK’s worldwide acclaimed follow-up <Old Boy> (2003). With a penchant for humoristic and witty movies, LEE naturally chose a rom-com, <The Beast and the Beauty> (2005), to make his feature debut. After providing the screenplays for the rom-com <Couples> (2011), on which he also served as first assistant director, and the family comedy <South Bound> (2012), he came back to the director’s chair in 2015 with <LUCK-KEY>, a remake of the Japanese film <Key of Life> (2012). The film marked the first time popular character actor YOO Hae-jin was given a lead role and was met with commercial success, garnering 6.9 million admissions.
