Majoring in Fashion Design, SHIM Hyun-seop built his career as a costume designer for theatrical performances for more than five years. He was not interested in costume design for films at all despite working for sci-fi dramas <Resurrection Of The Little Match Girl> (2002) and <Yesterday> (2002) as part-time jobs, and then made his debut as the costume director for <The President’s Barber> (2004). His turning point came with Director LEE Joon-ik’s ten-million-sales hit <King and the Clown> (2005), as he liked the original theatrical play from which the film was adapted. However since then, SHIM has regularly taken charge of costume designs in film productions specializing in historical dramas, including <Shadows in the Palace> (2007), <The Sword with No Name> (2009), <Battlefield Heroes> (2011) and <The Face Reader> (2013) among others. Notably in <The Face Reader>, SHIM tried to differentiate fabrics and colors of the costumes for the actors and actresses with strong personalities and different emotions. His delicate and thoughtful works were also demonstrated in <Empire of Lust> (2014), a love story between four main characters in the stormy transition period from Koryo to Chosun Dynasties. SHIM was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences with his achievement in costume design, as the main characters could be represented by their costumes. In 2015, SHIM completed another film, <The Throne> with director LEE Joon-ikand is collaborating again with Director PARK Chung-woo for the disaster film <Pandora>, following the 2012 box office hit <Deranged> (2012).
