Song Jonghee, born in 1969, began her career as a makeup artist/hair stylist in film with <Affliction of Man> in 1994. In the Myung Film-produced box office hit <The Contact> (1997), which was also the debut film of now renowned actress Jeon Doyeon, the short hair Song designed for the actress and the natural, almost invisible makeup she gave her earned many praises. Song worked with Jeon many times after that, with notable titles including <Happy End> (1999), <I Wish I Had a Wife> (2000), <My Mother, the Mermaid> (2004), <Secret Sunshine> (2007), <Way Back Home> (2013). She won Best Technician at the Women in Film Korea Festival for her work on Hur Jinho’s <One Fine Spring Day> (2001)
Song became known for her still ongoing collaboration with Director Park Chanwook since his breakthrough <Joint Security Area> (2000). She was behind the striking visual features of some of Park’s iconic characters, having come up with the unique hairstyle of Oh Daesoo’s character in <Oldboy> (2003) and the striking eye makeup of Geum-ja in <Sympathy for Lady Vengeance> (2005). In 2006, she teamed up with celebrated directors Bong Joonho on <The Host> and Kim Jeewoon on <Like A Virgin>. After completing work on <Crush and Blush> (2008), which was executive produced by Park, Song left Korea to study special make-up at the Vancouver Film School. During that time, since she was already staying near Seattle, she also received the opportunity to work for the Tang Wei-led <Late Autumn> (2010). After finishing her studies, Song came back to Korea and worked on <Eungyo> (2013), where she demonstrated her newly acquired skills in prosthetic makeup by ageing the face of lead actor Park Haeil. In <My Dictator> (2014), Song transformed Sul Kyunggu to make him share some physical features with Kim Ilsung, as he played an actor hired as a body double for the North Korean leader who becomes lost in his character. Song took on new challenges in <Big Match> (2014), <Coin Locker Girl> (2015) and Park Chanwook’s <The Handmaiden> (2015), in which she designed Hideko’s peculiar hairstyle.
As one of the most talented make-up artists in the Korean film industry, she is often called for demanding projects, such as the sci-fi <ILLANG : THE WOLF BRIGADE> (2018) and the historical war film <The Battle: Roar to Victory> (2019). More recently, she participated in <THE DAY I DIED : UNCLOSED CASE> (2020) and Park’s latest, <Decision to Leave> (2022).
