Born in 1965, MOON Hee-kyung majored in French language and literature and first made her name as a singer, winning in 1987 the Grand Prize at the MBC Riverside Song Fest, one of the major talent shows of the time. This early success effectively launched her career, with a first album released in 1989. By the middle of the 1990s, however, feeling she had reached the limits of what she could do as a singer and wanting to explore other opportunities, she decided to pursue a career in stage musicals. One of her first works in film was for the Korean soundtrack of Disney’s <The Hunchback of Notre Dame> (1996), for which she lent her singing voice to the character of Esmeralda for the Korean version. Following a first screen role in the film <Skeletons In The Closet> (2007), MOON made her television debut the following year with the drama series <All About My Family> (2008-2009). Around the same time, she could also be seen on the big screen, in the comedy <Antique> (2008) and the thriller <Possessed> (2009). As she grew busier in television, her film career has been mostly limited to bit roles and cameos. However, as a native of Jeju, she has recently starred in a couple of indie films set in the island, <Mermaid Unlimited> (2016) and <Eomung> (2018), and made another appearance in <Paper Flower>, the next film from <Eomung> director KOH Hoon. On a sidenote, MOON also made an unexpected comeback as a singer when, much to everyone’s surprise, not only did she take part in the rap music contest show <Tribe of Hip-Hop> in 2016, but she also performed better than everyone expected, going as far as the semi-finale stage.
