KIM Il-kwon, born in 1968, made his debut as a film producer with LEE Ji-sang’s <A Story About Her> (2000), which was selected in 2000 as the closing film of the Indie Forum, the oldest independent film festival in Korea. He quickly became a household name of the indie scene with his subsequent productions, notably the documentary <Annyoung, Sayonara> (2005), winner of the Grand Prize at Seoul Independent Film Festival, and <Milky Way Liberation Front>, named Independent Film of the Year by the Korean Independent Film Association. In 2007, he joined independent directors, fellow producers and film critics to create a new version of Indie Forum that would double as a professional event for filmmakers, and has since remained a permanent member of the organizing committee. He established in 2008 the company Cinema DAL to produce and distribute Korean indie films, with a focus on documentaries and social issues. Not afraid of stirring controversies, the movies he produced or distributed have tackled politically sensitive subjects, such as the deaths caused by forced evictions in Seoul with <Two Doors>, or the many errors and oversights that led to the Sewol Ferry Disaster with <The Truth Shall Not Sink with Sewol>. He is also known for having produced queer drama films <White Night> and <Night Flight>, which were both selected by the Berlin International Film Festival.
